that magnesium trick is so cool

yup, if you light it just right a magnesium infused fuse will burn under water. you spark it on one end, the fire travels under the water, and it is so hot it instantly turns the water around the fire into steam. thereby creating its own OXYGEN from the water vapor around the fire.

the biggest issue with magnesium fires is that the element burns itself to that white powder (magnesium oxide is its actual name) in air so quickly that the heat and 'fire' is not easily transferred to more magnesium in the wick. so, you need an incredibly pure and large amount of tiny particulate powdered magnesium to form a wick. or a strip of solid magnesium like that dude used.

the issue is, pure magnesium is HIGHLY brittle and soft! I DON'T THINK that strip would support enough weight to strangle somebody in their sleep through a block of ice melting due to pressure. the magnesium strip would have to be very thick and alloyed with something that is also highly combustible and flexible, but stronger than the magnesium. plus, i've no idea where you would find such an item or product. perhaps for welding metals or like i said before a type of ignition fuse.
